Bibliothèque Schoelcher

The Library was designed in 1884 by the architect Henri Picq who combined different materials, concrete, wrought iron and wood, to overcome the hazards of the marsh land of the town of Fort-de-France and the frequent adverse conditions in Martinique: cyclones and earthquakes. Classified as a historic monument in 1973, Schoelcher Library is an imposing feature in the town of Fort-de-France with its exotic architectural style borrowed from various trends recalling the colonial world of the time. \r\n Schoelcher Library has two main roles: it conserves heritage documents relating to Martinique and more broadly to our environment, the Caribbean, in an aim to pass on local history. \r\n Opening times: Monday from 1:00pm to 5:30pm, from Tuesday to Friday from 8:30am to 5:30pm and Saturday morning from 8:30am to 12pm.
