The Grand Marché de Fort-de-France, inaugurated in 1885, or Spice Market, is the largest market on the island. Under its metal and glass structure, a firework display or colours and aromas greets you: fruit and vegetables from all over Martinique: vanilla, all kinds of spices, chilis, bois bandé and rums are arranged. You will also find crafts as well as restaurants open at midday, which prepare typical Creole dishes: grilled fish, fritters, queen conches, crayfish, octopus, chicken colombo and more Do not leave without having bought a bakoua hat, a traditional Martiniquan had which will protect you from the sun's strong rays!

The floral decoration inside ornamenting any free space is protected by historical monument classification. Nineteen stained-glass windows depict characters or episodes from religious life, including five devoted to the life of St Louis in the apse. Seven stained-glass windows are decorated with religious symbols or bishops' coats of arms and mottos, such as those of Their Graces Le Herpeur, Porchez, Fava and Carméné. The main scenes are bordered with decorations featuring tropical flora or religious symbols. All these stained-glass windows are the work of the glass painter Néret and date from the end of the 19th century. The inside of the fort is reached by the Boulevard de Blénac with its extension, the Boulevard de Baas until the entrance of the royal bastion. The Route Dauphine leads to the back entrance of Aublimont barracks. The Porte de Blénac and the Porte de Baas open the fort to the outside. There are several buildings inside the fort such as the Aycard pavillion and Delacost pavillion. The site has been classified as a historical monument since 15 March 1973. A naval military base, the site was only open to the public for guided tours, as well as on National Navy day in April and on the heritage days in September. Since 20 July 2014, the fort has been open to the public every day.

Here is an excerpt from the description of the master's house in the 19th century: "the front steps are formed from a small wall crowned with large old tiles and you go up 5 steps in a half-moon. The living room is tiled with white and black marble, with a large bedroom and and office alongside. Behind is a tiled gallery in which a staircase leads to the next floor which is divided into four bedrooms… the house has a surface area of 20.50m on 14.20 metre. It is built in local wood and is covered in tiles…"
